Sinopse
Bahia, 1925. Uma das maiores secas da história do Nordeste leva para Ilhéus Gabriela (Sônia Braga), uma bela retirante que com sua beleza e sensualidade conquista a todos, principalmente Nacib (Marcello Mastroianni), dono do bar mais popular da cidade, que emprega Gabriela para trabalhar em sua casa e com quem tem um caso. 
O relacionamento dos dois fica tão intenso que eles se casam, mas tudo parece desmoronar quando Gabriela lhe é infiel com o maior conquistador da cidade. Paralelamente, um "coronel" vai ser julgado por ter matado sua mulher com o amante. Os outros "coronéis" acham que ele tem de ser inocentado, pois houve um forte motivo para o crime, mas os tempos mudaram e determinados conceitos do passado estão sendo enterrados.
